Maine GED: How To Get A High School Equivalency Diploma In Maine 2023?
In Maine, individuals who are looking to earn a high school equivalency diploma have passed the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET™), which is administered by the ETS (abbreviated form of the Educational Testing Service), in lieu of the GED (General Educational Development) exam since January 2014. Now, let us walk you through the Maine GED or Maine HiSET™.
1. HiSET™ eligibility requirements in Maine (instead of GED requirements)

To take HiSET™ exam, you must meet the following requirements as follows:
- You must be at least 18 years of age. However,If you are 17 years old, you might be qualified for taking the HiSET™ test if you haven’t enrolled in high school for at least one year and have had a state waiver, or you have been home-schooled.
- You have submitted passing scores on the practice test or an alternative proof of sufficient test prep before taking the actual exam.
- You must present a valid form of government-issued photo identification.
- There is no test preparation required.
- Although you don’t need to be a resident of Maine to take the HiSET™ exam in that state, Maine residents can take the test at no charge.
Other requirements for testing may be requested by the local testing center. Please contact the center nearest you for more information about your eligibility, the exam or the practice test.

2. Maine GED Test Preparation
To prepare for your high school equivalency exam, it is advisable to attend some free or low-cost programs offered by the Maine Adult Maine Adult Education Association so as to sharpen your reading, writing and math skills or brush up on your science and social studies content area knowledge. A list of Adult Education Centers can be found on the HiSET™ website.
What’s more, if you want to learn more about test content or formatting, let’s visit the resources including sample questions, video tutorials and online study companion on the ETS website.
Additionally, another way to prepare for your exam is to take online practice tests. GED Test Pro is a leading educational platform, which provides you with many GED practice questions with detailed explanations to help you hone your high school knowledge and skills. Let’s practice now!
3. Maine HiSET™ Test Content and Format
The HiSET™ exam measures your proficiency in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, just like the GED. The multiple-choice exam in Maine is offered in both English and Spanish and is administered on paper. The five portions of the HiSET™ exam can be taken all at once, or you can take each one separately and in any sequence you like:
3.1. Language Arts – Reading
During the reading portion, test takers are required to read a series of written passages to answer 50 MCQs within 65 minutes. Thereby, their reading comprehension skills and their ability to analyze a text will be evaluated.
3.2. Language Arts – Writing
The writing portion typically asks you to complete 60 MCSs in which test takers revise selected words or phrases from a written passage and write a well-organized essay response in 120 minutes.

3.3. Math
The 55 multiple-choice questions in the math section test candidates’ understanding of number sense, probability and statistics, geometry, and algebra. Examinees have 90 minutes to finish this section of the test.
During the math test, you are allowed to use a calculator which is provided by the testing center.
3.4. Science
The science test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions that are given over the course of 80 minutes. Understanding of Earth, life, and physical science concepts is necessary for success in this section of the exam. Additionally, test takers are required to evaluate experiment design and interpret scientific data presented in graphs and tables.
3.5. Social Studies
One of the shorter exam sections is the social studies one, which lasts 70 minutes. It has 60 multiple-choice questions in geography, economy, governance, and history. Students will be given access to a variety of historical documents and asked to make deductions from them, assess their reliability, or distinguish between fact and opinion.
4. HiSET™ Test Scoring and Passing
If you get a score of 8 out of 20 on each individual subtest and score at least 2 out of 6 on the language arts essay portion of the test, you will pass the Maine HiSET™ exam and earn a state-issued high-school diploma. Therefore, a scaled total score of 45 out of 100 on all five subtests is a passing score that you need to achieve.
5. Registration and Cost
In Maine, all HiSET™ test takers must take the HiSET™ tests at an official testing center because online proctored tests aren’t available. Let’s explore the list of testing centers below and register at the one where you intend to take the exam.
If you are a resident of Maine, there is no charge. For more information on registration, get in touch with your neighborhood testing facility or the Maine HiSET™ administrator.
6. GED and HiSET™ Transcripts
