Explanation

The illustrated lab setup shows undistilled water heated to its boiling point (left). Substances whose boiling points are higher than that of the water remain in the flask. As more water vapor accumulates, it is forced down the cooling tube (condenser), where it cools back down to the boiling point, condenses to liquid, and collects in the beaker (right).
