GED New York: How To Get Your GED In New York?
If you want to attain a high school equivalency certificate in New York, you need to pass the four subject tests of the GED examination. In this article, you will find almost everything that you need to know about the GED New York test.
1. GED New York Scoring
The GED (General Education Development) includes four individual subject tests which are scored on a range from 100 to 200 points.
Like the GED test in other states, the passing score on each GED New York subtest is 145 points. Therefore, with four subject tests, you need to obtain a minimum score of 580.
The GED exam is designed to measure readiness for college and/or workforce as directed by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). CCSS is a set of standards which indicates what students must be taught at what grade level.
Students who pass the GED New York test will receive a certificate equivalent to a high school diploma.
Candidates can also access the online GED testing. The GED used to be only taken at a GED testing location, but that has changed with the arrival of the Online Proctored (O.P.) test. Nevertheless, three states including New York, Vermont and South Carolina have not offered the online GED test yet.

4. GED New York Price
New York is among four states that completely subsidize the GED exam for its inhabitants. Thus, the GED test here is free. Not only is the exam free in the state, the majority of prep facilities also provide classes free of charge.
Like the GED test in other states, the GED New York test is totally computer-based. Paper-formatted GED testing is no option. Only students with disabilities are eligible to apply for paper-based testing accommodations.
5. More High School Equivalency Diploma Choices in New York
The High School Equivalency Office of the New York State Education Department has approved more High School Equivalency choices including the 24 college credits option, the NEPD, and the Regents tests.
24 college credits
If students have attained 24 college credits from a certificate or degree-granting program at a U.S. college or university certified by a U.S. Institution of Higher Education, they can apply for a New York State HSE (High School Equivalency) certificate.
New York’s High School Equivalency Office does not acknowledge credits from foreign post-secondary institutions. Test takers must live in New York for at least 30 days, not graduate from high school and meet age requirements.
NEDP
In 2016, to get a New York State HSE diploma, students can take the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). Those who are at least 18 years old qualify to take NEDP.
On the NEDP test, students need to show their abilities in a series of job- and real-life simulations. Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in 10 content aspects.
Regents exams
Taking Regents Exams is another New York High School Equivalency Pathway combining with one GED testing area. Therefore, students can not gain a New York HSE diploma only by passing the Regents Exams. They must pass at least one GED subject test to obtain a New York State HSE Diploma.
To qualify to sit for one of the four GED subject tests, test takers must reside in New York for at least 30 days and be at least 16 years old.
16, 17, and 18-year-old applicants must meet additional restrictions and requirements. For instance, people applying to use Regents exam credit toward a New York HSE diploma must use the so-called “R Application” form. Meanwhile, people under 19 years old are required to submit an age eligibility form.
