1. Illinois GED online
You can take the GED Illinois test at one official testing site in the state or take the test online. Nevertheless, to qualify for taking the four GED subject tests online, you must obtain “green” (likely to pass) results on the GED Ready test.
Each of the four modules offers one GED Ready test. You can buy them on the website GED.com with the price of $6.99 each. Thus, you need to pay $28 for the overall online GED Ready test.
The HiSET test can also be taken online. The “HiSET-At-Home” exam is also known as the Remote Proctored (R.P.) HiSET exam. Of course, the paper-based HiSET test can not be taken online and you must attain satisfactory results on the HiSET OPT (Official Practice Test).

3. Illinois GED testing requirements
– You haven’t got a high school or equivalent degree.
– You haven’t enrolled in another educational program.
– You are 16 years old or older. Nonetheless, the 16-year-old test takers must meet additional requirements like getting permission from their parental consent or school board.
– In Illinois, only state residents are eligible to take the high school equivalency testing.
– You do not need to pass the GED Ready practice test or register for a prep course.
– GED candidates must sit for and pass the Illinois and U.S. Constitution Test which are offered free of charge at Illinois Regional Offices of Education and some main adult educational programs.
4. Illinois GED cost
If sitting for the Illinois GED test at an testing location, you must pay $30 for each subtest (or $120 for the entire exam)
Other fees will apply for those who want to take the GED Illinois test online. Specifically, you need to pay $36 for each subtest, so the overall cost will be $144. Besides, you need to pay the extra cost of the four GED Ready tests as well ($28); therefore the total cost will be $172.
Yet, the Illinois passed legislation allowed the reduction in the testing fees in the state. The fee to take the Illinois GED test (both online and in-person) is currently $40.

5.1. Do I have to be a resident of Illinois to take the GED Illinois test?
Yes. You must be a resident of Illinois for at least 30 days to take the GED Illinois exam.
5.2. Can I take the GED Illinois test or HiSET test online?
You can either take the Illinois GED and HiSET tests online or at an official testing location in Illinois. You can look at the list of testing centers in Illinois we provided above.
Starting September 1st, 2021, the Online Proctored (OP) GED test option allowed candidates to take the GED test remotely.
5.3. How long is the GED Illinois test?
On the GED Illinois test, examinees will be given a total of 7 hours and 41 minutes to complete all four subtests with 115 minutes for Math, 90 minutes for Social Studies, 90 minutes for Science and 150 minutes for Language Arts.
5.4. How many questions are on the GED Illinois test?
There are 46, 35, 34 and 46 questions on GED Math, Social Studies, Science and Language Arts respectively.
5.5. Can I retake a subject on the GED Illinois test if I don’t pass?
You are allowed to retake each subject test up to 3 times without having to wait. After that, you must wait for 60 days. On your first two retakes, you will receive a discounted price (($12 per retake instead of $32). To qualify for getting additional discounted retakes, you must wait 60 days, pay the full price of $32, and then you will be offered two more discounted retakes. All retakes must take place within 12 months of the first attempt.
